St James Anglican Church was constructed in 1867 to replace the medieval church.   The original church had fallen into disrepair and was being used as a farm building.   The old church was demolished about the time the new church was constructed.

in 1881 serious subsidence occurred in the chancel and the east wall and parts of the north and south walls had to be demolished and rebuilt.

In the Second World War, a V2 rocket destroyed the octagonal stone spire, the nave roof, windows and much of the interior.   The roof and tower spire were replaced in 1951 with the copper coverings that give the roof its green appearance.

For its architectural and historic interest the building is classified as being Grade C which is equivalent to a Grade II secular building.   Since 1950 there have been 500,000 secular and religious buildings that have been listed as English Heritage buildings.   90% of the buildings are Grade II or C and are highly unlikely to receive any kind of grant to repair or preserve them.
