Elizabeth Maria Edwards formerly Stephens neé Poole - mother of Elsie Leonora Williams neé Edwards

- research in Ottawa by Hugh Reekie, March 2005 onwards -

Looking into Cardiff entries with John Sayers, the expert, I found, as expected, in the 1891 census, Parish of St. John, at 12 Newport Road - John Edwards, 58, born Neath, Welsh speaking [b abt 1833]; he is listed as a "Dealer in Fancy Goods" [note - he is not listed as a coach builder or repairer]. His wife Elizabeth Maria, 42, [believed born Poole] was born at "Cricklade, Gloucestershire" [about 1849]. The three stepsons are: Arthur Geo Stephens, 20 (also Dealer in Fancy Goods), Lloyd Augustus, 17 "in partnership", and William A, 15, scholar; and finally daughter Elsie Leonora Edwards, 8, scholar, all b Cardiff, Glam. Mary Anne Berritt?, 27, Domestic Servant completes the household.

Searching in "free BMD" shows that there is an entry for Cricklade, Wiltshire, Jan-Mar 1848 - Elizabeth Poole, Vol 8 page 314. There is only one entry (in that name) *for the period 1842 - 1852.

John Edwards married Elizabeth M. Stephens neé Poole in Cardiff in the late Summer of 1880. The circumstance of their living around 1881 seem a little strange. It is belived that John married Elizabeth soon after the death of her first husband. The 1881 census shows Ffloyd and William, 2 of the offspring from Elizabeth's first marriage, living with Elizabeth's parents John & Eunice Poole in Monmouth; a natural thing do do after distress in a family. But Arthur G Stevens, 10 years old, is living in Cardiff with his stepfather; One can conclude that, after the tragic death of Elizabeth's first husband, she moved to her father's home and left her eldest son to help with the Fancy Goods shop. Perhaps living with her father and providing for her younger sons was a less stressful, and more cost efficient, way of living; or perhaps they were just visiting; no-one really knows.

Obituaries of John Edwards state, inter alia, that he worked for his father Morgan Edwards in the family carriage repair firm in Cardiff. Various City Directory entries have been identified. See note 399 below.

351 - IGI has an entry Morgan Edwards md 02 Nov 1828 Ann Davies in Neath Glamorgan - only entry - batch 7200307 source 0820067 DHMR 16Feb2007

368 - Letter from Hugh's Aunt Eryl (aged abt 86) dated 14 Nov 2007 [extra text of HR in square brackets] states: 1. .. Poole was a remembered name ... 2. My mother 's second name was Leonora & what more likely theme that her mother would include her mother's name in Elsie's 3. Our Uncle Bert (Stephens) [The Ffloyd aged 7 in 1881?] would be granpa Edwards stepson [a son of Elizabeth Maria's first marriage]. We knew him well; he was very close to my mother & used to stay with us at Loaning Head [Garrigill, Cumbria]. His Morgan [3 wheeler car] broke down one time at Langwathby which he called "Llang-tiddley-push". I never heard of his having brothers at all but perhaps they were much older than he & did not keep in contact. Granny Edwards [Elizabeth Maria] owned the shop in the arcade which when Shirley [my sister] & I - staying with Uncle Bert's son Donald - was quite an imposing toy shop, which on marriage in those days would appear to belong to granpa Edwards. The carriage business which I think he ran in partnership with his brother finished the body work of carriages - rather like Van den Plas in London; my father [D J Williams the minister] said when cars came in he did not carry on. There is his obit from the papers around & we had a silver trowel presented to him when he laid the foundation stone - probably of a church in Cardiff. (I don't know of this helps at all but does seem to get source [? some] of your dates etc.)

399 An obituary (from Shirley Jackson via Ian Reekie) states John Edwards was b in Cowbridge (vale of Glamorgan). He died 9 Sep 1907 aged 78; prob born 1829. Glam parents Morgan Edwards & Mary Rowland, neither look promising. But a Morgan Edwards, Coachbuilder is in Slater's 1850 directory at Cowbridge (but not 1857) - per GENUKI.
